THE JEWEL OF THE JUNGLE

The Ocellated Turkey is widely regarded as the most beautiful wild turkey in the world. Found only in the tropical forests of the Yucatán Peninsula, pursuing this extraordinary bird is one of North America’s most exclusive hunting experiences.

The Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata) is the closest living relative of the North American Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), yet it possesses its own unique appearance, behavior, and hunting traditions.

At Peninsula Hunters, decades of local knowledge, expert guides, and carefully selected hunting areas have established us as North America’s premier destination for Ocellated Turkey hunting, offering hunters an authentic and unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Mayan jungle.

GEOGRAPHIC RANGE AND HABITAT

The Ocellated Turkey is endemic to the Yucatán Peninsula, occurring only in the Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, with small populations extending into northern Belize and Guatemala.

Its habitat ranges from dry tropical forests and cattle ranches in northern Yucatán to the dense rainforest farther south. Because breeding seasons vary throughout the peninsula, knowing where and when to hunt is essential.

THE HUNT

Hunting the Ocellated Turkey is an exciting pursuit that rewards patience and careful planning.

Depending on the conditions, hunts are conducted from well-positioned blinds overlooking food plots and water sources, where dominant toms are called into range. For hunters seeking a more challenging experience, we also navigate the jungle with lightweight pop-up blinds, reading fresh tracks, scratching areas, and other signs of turkey activity before selecting the ideal location to set up and begin calling.

Our experienced local guides understand the breeding behavior and daily movements of Ocellated Turkeys, often calling patiently for hours as territorial gobblers slowly work their way toward what they believe is a rival tom.

CONSERVATION

The Ocellated Turkey was most recently assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2020 and is currently classified as Near Threatened, primarily due to habitat loss and uncontrolled hunting in parts of its natural range.

At Peninsula Hunters, we believe responsible hunting and conservation go hand in hand. Through habitat restoration, year-round stewardship, and sustainable hunting practices, we are committed to protecting healthy Ocellated Turkey populations for future generations.

WHAT DOES THE OCELLATED TURKEY LOOK LIKE?

Unlike any other wild turkey, the Ocellated Turkey displays brilliant iridescent plumage of emerald green, bronze, and copper. Mature gobblers feature bright blue heads, orange nodules, long sharp spurs, and the distinctive eye-shaped markings on their tail feathers that give the species its name.

Its spectacular appearance has earned it a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful game birds.

BEHAVIOR

The Ocellated Turkey’s breeding behavior is unlike that of any other wild turkey.

Instead of producing the familiar gobble, mature toms emit a series of deep, drum-like bass notes that gradually increase in speed and intensity before ending in a dramatic crescendo.

Unlike its northern cousin, the Ocellated Turkey shows little interest in hen calls. Instead, dominant toms respond aggressively to the challenge of another mature gobbler entering their territory. For this reason, traditional diaphragm, box, and slate calls are ineffective. To this day, electronic callers remain the only effective method of calling Ocellated Turkeys, accurately reproducing the vocalizations of rival males and triggering their territorial instincts.
